General Outlook

• The Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology is the leading hospital for Mental Health in Poland.

• It was established on March 24, 1951, by a regulation of the Council of  Ministers on the initiative group of neurobiologists and psychiatrists.

• This institute was situated in a pavilion at the State Hospital for the Nervous and Mentally Ill in Pruszków for about 23 years.

• The professional team of about 60 members worked in difficult conditions for 23 years. Finally, in 1973 the institute was moved to Warsaw.

• Moreover, this institute plays an important role in shaping the National Mental Health Policies of Poland.

• They designed many programs including the Mental Health program of different versions, whose main focus is to promote mental health at all levels and prevent mental disorders.

• The Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology has many departments. The first one is the Department of Psychiatry, which is further sub-divided that include;

• Psychiatric Clinic that helps in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental disorder patients, This clinic consists of 95 beds in total.
• Child and Youth Psychiatric Clinic treat the patient from age 13 to 19 years by using the diagnostic and therapeutic approach.
• Clinic of Nervous, Personality Disorders, and Nutrition
• Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation is specialized for the treatment of Schizophrenia.

• The department of Neurology is sub-divided into the following clinics;

• A neurological clinic that treats conditions like neurodegenerative diseases, drug-resistant epilepsy, dementia syndrome, neuromuscular disease, and vascular & inflammatory disease of the brain
• II neurological clinic that provides diagnostic and treatment services for nervous system diseases like cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, stroke, and multiple sclerosis

• The department of Neurosurgery provides surgical treatment of dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, vascular defects of the brain, tremors, malignant cerebral edema, and back pain syndromes.
• The Counseling Department provides beneficial counseling for mental health, neurosurgery, genetic, and neurological.

• The other departments are genetic, neurochemistry, clinical neurophysiology, neuropathology, and radiology.
