Dr. Sanjay Agarwala is a senior orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedics and traumatology, joint replacement and adult orthopaedic reconstructive surgery. He is the Medical Director and Head of Orthopedics at P.D. Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai and also serves as a Visiting Consultant at Breach Candy Hospital. He has been associated with P.D. Hinduja National Hospital, a charitable trust hospital, for almost 35 years and has combined clinical leadership with teaching, research and service in orthopaedics.
Dr. Agarwala's qualifications include D.Ortho, M.S. in Orthopaedics and M.Ch. in Orthopaedics from England. He has developed particular expertise in total knee replacement, total hip replacement, primary and revision joint surgery, trauma and fracture fixation using AO techniques, high tibial osteotomy, knee arthroscopy for sports injuries, micro lumbar discectomy and robotic-assisted joint replacement.
A major area of his research has been avascular necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, a condition involving loss of blood supply to the hip. Over more than two decades of research, he developed and published a medical approach using bisphosphonates for the management of AVN. The supplied source describes this as a 'Made in India' solution that can help selected patients avoid surgery, and notes that the work has been recognized internationally through inclusion in orthopaedic publications and books.
His academic work also includes research into joint replacement designed around the physiological range of movement of Indian and Asian patients, including total hip replacement. This work has been published in international peer-reviewed and indexed journals. His postgraduate dissertation for the M.Ch. Orth examination at the University of Liverpool in 1985 investigated nerve conduits as an alternative to nerve grafts and received the Norman Roberts Medal; he also authored original papers in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Agarwala has played an important role in orthopaedic education and professional organizations. He has conducted teaching programmes for orthopaedic professionals across India and has been involved in DNB Orthopaedics training at Hinduja Hospital. He also served as Chairman of the AO Foundation Western India Chapter for fracture-management education. His professional leadership includes serving as a former Founder Trustee and Past President of the Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons (ISHKS).
