Overview

Dr. (Prof.) A. K. Banerji is an Indian neurosurgeon whose career has combined clinical practice with the development of specialist services and medical education. His work encompasses surgery for brain tumours, cerebral aneurysms, pituitary lesions and peripheral nerve disorders. He is recognised for helping establish microneurosurgery in India and for his contribution to the organisation of neurosurgical training.

After completing his medical and surgical education in Lucknow and specialist neurosurgical training at Christian Medical College, Vellore, Professor Banerji joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in June 1965. Working with Professor P. N. Tandon, he helped build the institute’s neurosurgery department during its early years. He became Professor of Neurosurgery in 1979 and served as Chief of the Neurosciences Centre from 1988 until his retirement from AIIMS in 1995.

His responsibilities at AIIMS extended beyond operating and teaching. He contributed to the expansion of facilities for neurological care, supporting collaboration between neurosurgery, neurology, neuroradiology, neuroanaesthesia and neuropathology. He also helped develop training opportunities for surgeons who subsequently took up specialist and academic positions across India.

Following his retirement from AIIMS, Professor Banerji served as Director and Senior Consultant at the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (VIMHANS), New Delhi. He joined Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals as an Emeritus Consultant in Neurosurgery in 2007. His wider professional contribution includes leadership of national neurosurgical societies, research publications and continuing medical education through the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (India) Trust. AIIMS awarded him a lifetime Emeritus Professorship in recognition of his service to the institute and the specialty.
